Size of drainpipe

The existing (broken) rainwater drainpipe that goes from the main roof to extension of our attached brownstone is 3″ in diameter, the same size as the drain hole on the roof. The drainhole for the extension, where this and extension rainwater goes into the building, is 4″.  1.  When I replace the drainpipe, should I use a 4″ diameter drainpipe instead (especially given recent weather patterns)?    2\. Since the roof drainhole is 3″ must I increase the diameter of that hole as well?  (That’s more difficult). 3\. Any non-shill references to do this work?  I find roofers seem to be too busy and add on unneeded work like replacing my entire roof (“it’s shot” they say but I don’t have any leaks). Thanks to all!

Thank you Steve, it does go into the 4″ drain in the extension which eventually ties into the sewer line…

I think code for a roof drain is three inches.  This was one of those lessons I had learned in an old office building in NYC where a 3″ line broke and leaked all over someone’s desk; after a lot of debate, the plumber and my boss swore it was a roof drain line as it was 3″ (a sanitary waste line is supposed to be 4″).  I swore a toilet was tied into it.  Well, low and behold the plumber found out what it really was when he was looking into the pipe and someone flushed a nearby toilet (and it wasn’t number one).   That really happen and I will never forget what a 3″ line is supposed to be used for. Let a real plumber pipe in here to say whether he/she thinks that you should change to a 4″ line.  I will say this, if this was my house and if I had to change the roof drain to 4″, I would leave it at 3″. The reason yours ties to a four” at the end of the run is because at some point it probably ties into the sanitary system which is 4″.   Steve
