Roof quickfix

After all the rain the past couple of weeks I went up to the roof to check out the condition. For the most part it looks like my roof should be good for 2-3 yrs but I noticed a crack on the front ledge of the house. The crack is about 10-12 inches long and does not look that wide. If you look carefully you can see the brick from the ledge. Anyone know what I can use for a quick patching until I replace my roof in a 2-3 yrs or theres nothing that can be done? Thanks in advance

I would figure out what caused the crack first.  could be sign of a bigger problem.

If it’s your roof and not the parapet wall the black goop, roofing tar, is the way to go.  The best thing I’ve found to take it off your hands is WD40.  You can follow it with the silver stuff but you’ll need the black goop first.

I used Karnak No. 19 flashing cement for the smaller holes and Karnak No. 34 mesh (and the cement) for the larger rips/tears like yours. It is supposed to be a temporary fix like the others mentioned above. I got mine at home depot and used a regular scraping tool or other such applier to put it on – it is sticky and gooey and won’t want to come off of you or your clothes without some extensive scrubbing (I still have bits of it on my shoes!), though, so wear gloves and dress in old clothes.

You can also get it in a silver color – “Aluminum” fibered is what they call it.  Stir it really well until its very thick brownish metallic colored in the can then paint it on with a chip brush.  Its about $14 a gallon at Home Depot and you can use it all over the roof as you notice these stretch cracks appear with termperature changes.

Roof patch.  it’s black tar and comes in quarts, gallons, 5 gallon.  A quart should do it. Any hardware store will have it
