Non-annoying CO & smoke alarm recommendation needed.

I am ready to choose and install four CO / smoke detectors in a 2 story unit. Can anyone recommend a good model? We don’t live in a McMansion. I worry about some of the newer features – models that are overly sensitive to cooking, or that will set off every unit within a network, or that will beep painfully loud. If anyone has researched this or learned from past mistakes, I’d like to know your opinion. Ours will be hard wired for electrical power, but if there’s a good battery model, maybe we can buy the hard-wired version. Thanks, Mike C

Hi Mike C, This is not really a direct answer to your question but I hope my recent experience helps. I actually just had an a fire in my apartment yesterday because I checked to see if my smoke detector was working and I checked it in the absolute worst way that anyone should check to see if there smoke detector is working. It was an absolute awful experience that I am currently dealing with. I personally would definitely install a smoke detector that IS extremely sensitive to the smell of smoke. I would rather deal with a temporary annoying sound and know that I have a working smoke detector. I would also personally prefer something with batteries. Then you can avoid the possibility of any electrical problems. I can’t advise you on CO detectors. I must stress, because of what just happened to me, to please install a fire extinguisher on each floor. I didn’t have one and actually never thought of owning one until I had the experience of a fire. I looked briefly on Home Depot’s and on Lowe’s website and there have two types. One comes in an aerosol can and the others are the type where you pull out the pin, etc… I hope this helps.
