cornice tilted forward, dripping water

This has been bothering me for a year now. My cornice slopes a little in the middle left. Where it slopes, it’s tilted forward. So when it rains a hose stream of water comes off the front of the cornice and puddles water in stairs to garden apt. Any one rain is no big deal, but you can see that, over years splashing water is damaging bricks on facade near ground. It’s seems like something I should be able to fix myself but can’t figure out how to do it. Only thing I can think of is buying flashing from somewhere and gluing to roof/cornice top. Will this work? Where do I get correct flashing?

I just restored my cornice. It’s hard to tell from your description, but my cornice was also tilted forward. The problem was that, over the years, a separation developed between the cornice and the front of the building, at the roof level, allowing water in. Freeze thaw cycles worsened the situation, over years, and it was going to collapse if not fixed. The supports were rotted, and it was dangerous. I used Adami restoration. They were not cheap, but I was satisfied with the result. If you are in a landmark district, then I can highly recommend them.

Typically, there were cast iron/steel brackets over top of masonry that fastened to wood of cornice. Look up carefully for bar stock to see if that’s what you have. Sag sounds like some part of the structure has failed, I suspect that major repairs are needed. If the trees allow, sometimes the right contractor can fix while standing on cherry picker from street. Jabus has done a few of these for us. Speak to Jimmy Buscarella. Normally we have supplied the marine plywood from Kamco (double primed and painted w/oil based paint) for the cleat, and Azek for the soffit.

You need a roofer to check this out. Also, don’t get too close to the edge since there is a danger you could fall (and/or it could collapse).

So my cornice is a standard italianate style one. I don’t think there are any gutters on it. The roof is sloped with gutter in back. I think the cornice is wood. I have no idea how cornices are are attached to houses. Are you saying I need a carpenter to completely replace this cornice, or reattach it? When my house was repointed they painted the cornice so the current one still looks good.

Start by cleaning out your drains and gutters on the top of your roof; many cornices have what is called a Yankee gutter. But other than keeping your gutters and drains cleaned this is not a splash some tar & flashing around DIY job. If it is not properly restored your sag will just get worse and could eventually cause the whole cornice to fall off! If it is wooden cornice that you want or need; due to Landmarks district, to maintain and restore get a carpenter with experience, not a waterproofing contractor. The wooden structure need to be restored before the waterproofing goes on.
