Con Edison
Have a big problem. Finishing my gut renovation (NEVER AGAIN). Con Edison was supposed to come and run new wires to support my increased demand (since I now have split air conditioning throughout the house). They came – but did not finish the job, because they found some problem with a pipe, that they said THEY will correct. This was Friday. They told me they will call me within 24 hours to schedule a new appointment. Of course, they did not. And now – NO ONE knows who to contact. The number that I called before 718-802-6311, to schedule the initial appointment – said that they are a different department and they don’t know. They actually tried to contact the repair department, who said – they don’t even know who I am! And the electrician doesn’t know who to contact either! I’m so frustrated, I am about to call the politicians! What do I do? At this point, I could be waiting for Con Edison for another year, and no one will do anything. I can’t move into the house – because there is not enough electricity there!

I had a similar problem. It took them 3 months to come and put in my new power line in. At some point we occupied their downtown office lobby demanding some person come down to speak to us. We were without proper heat in january/february (!) With a baby (!). They are out to make your life hell. It’s what you get when one company owns the lines and politics doesn’t care. They dont even bother reforming the DEP and the DOB. These agencies are just fat and inefficient harming us and the economy. Sorry, that had to come out. My advice, redo your energy calculation. Size the hvac smaller. Replace electric dryers with gas for example. Maybe you’re just over by a little bit and you can save yourself the hassle alltogether.

You don’t even need to call. You can conveniently file a complaint online. The PSC responds very quickly. So for it. There are times I have wondered who at the PSC is sleeping with who at the utility but when they do decide to hold the utility responsible you get a great response.

don’t even waste your time calling con ed again, just call the PSC and file a complaint. con ed will call you within a day.

I’ve found that if you get someone who can’t/won’t help, you should just hang up & keep calling until you get a rep who will.

ConEd can be very very slow, especially after all the damaged they are dealing with from the rough winter on their old, worn lines. In Feb we lost power just at our house (had lost it to large sections of the block a few times during the winter). It was on ConEd’s end. They jumped us so that we had partial power (most lights and outlets, heat, and the fridge). I had to call constantly to get the appointment to fix it and the earliest I got was 3 months out. It sucked majorly because we couldn’t use our appliances (w/d, oven, and heat in bathrooms the worst to work around). I called many times and was told that they are just so backed up from the winter damage that I would just have to wait–if the outage affected enough people (like when the school on our block was out as well) you could get priority. I know this is kind of a downer, but be prepared to be patient. Keep calling until you get someone who will give you an appointment. I went through many who were just incompetent and giving me the wrong kind of appointments before I got the right one. Also, they would only make it for alt side days for us, which limited it to one day a week for options.

actually, while utilities do not like hearing what Bob says, I would just utter those words to a Con Ed rep by asking “what do I have to do call the……?” I would say the con ed rep will be more than willing to do the run around game for you. Steve
