Blizzard Preparation
Any advice for homeowners in preparation for Monday night’s snowstorm? Things you wouldn’t have thought of but learned from the last blizzard?

Brooklyn has power-lines underground. I really do not believe electricity can be knocked out that easily unless transformer blows up. Not so many people die because they freeze in house without power. More people die because they running generator indoors or because they improperly wired it. Otherwise (from my upbringing in Russia) stay put. Do not drive unless really necessary. If driving – use higher gear. If applying brakes and you have ABS – push pedal hard. If fishtail – do not let off the gas and do not overcompensate with steering. If going outside – have proper hat, gloves and the rest. Earmuffs is not a hat. Sneakers are not snowshoes.

My top three are generator, generator and generator. Power outage varies by neighborhood but it just takes once to know how great this can be. There are some very simple, not expensive setups to run the electrical essentials e.g. sump pumps, heat, fridge and espresso machine. Hope that helps! Matt R www.nyc-hs.com

We have heat wire on the back of the roof and the switch is inside. The idea is that it keeps ice from forming there as well as through the gutter by warming the water enough to make it to the waste line.

If anyone has numbers or emails of people who will shovel residential sidewalks and stairs in Park Slope, please share. There are many older folks on my block looking for such an option and we rarely get door to door shovelers.

The Kensingtonbk site has some pretty good info. A lot of it common knowledge, but here you go: Snow Preparation A quick reminder about what a bunch of snow means you’ve got to do: What’s required ?Every owner, lessee, tenant, occupant or other person having charge of any lot or building must clean snow and or ice from the sidewalk. ?Cleaning must be done within 4 hours after the snow has stopped falling. ?If snow stops falling after 9pm, it must be cleared by 11am the following morning. ?Snow may not be thrown into the street. ?If snow becomes frozen or is too hard to remove, residents can uses ashes, sand, sawdust or similar materials within the same time limits. ?The sidewalk must be cleaned as soon as the weather permits. The fine for violating any of these rules is between $100 and $150 for the first offense, and as high as $350 for subsequent offenses, according to city notices. http://kensingtonbk.com/weather/blizzard-watch-how-to-prepare-what-to-do-during-and-after-the-storm

I had the ice dam problem that “gtinsouthslope” mentioned for the first [and, I hope, ONLY] time last winter. After that I had my gutter replaced with a different type that doesn’t sit on the rear wall, but projects slightly beyond it. This was a fairly big deal, involving rebuilding a few courses of brickwork and replacing part of the roof deck. I hope it works. Of course this storm will probably be different and, in some respects, less damaging than the many smaller storms, with freeze/thaw cycles, we had last winter.

You may discover that you have ice dams which causes water to drip into the house. There is one spot in my home where water enters when the temperature rises quickly after a heavy snow storm. This year I purchased a roof rake to remove the snow from the extension’s roof. I’m hoping removing the snow before it freezes will prevent the ice dams from forming.

No, I wouldn’t worry too much about snow accumulation on the roof. In any case, if there’s as much snow as what’s being predicted, how would you open the roof hatch to get up there and clear it?

well, i have to tell you the truth, I did a lot of shoveling when growing up in my parent’s house on LI. and you are correct, when you are the responsible party, it becomes a little more than just a couple of necessities. I am getting my generator out as the wind they are talking about may knock the power and if it goes down in a few areas, it may be hours before they get to us.

If you are parked on a one way street, try to be parked on the left side. The plows tend to push all the snow on the right side of the street making it more difficult to dig your car out.

I also want to say I’m only asking here because of the predicted significance of this storm. They are now calling for possibly 20-30″ of snow.

Steve, I grew up in New England and the DC area but this is the first time in a snowstorm of this significance where I’m responsible for the house 🙂 Bob, that’s the kind of info I am curious about. Things like that to check on. Do we have to worry about snow accumulation on the flat roof? Our house is 140 years old and is still standing so I probably shouldn’t worry too much.

Don’t panic if your skylights start dripping. In my house during a real blizzard, with snow and high wind, some snow blows through the vents and melts on top of the leaded glass. It’s only happened a handful of times in the 40 years I’ve owned my house and isn’t much to worry about–just spread out some towels to catch the drips, if necessary.

I am sorry, but I have to ask, are you not from here? it has been the same since I was growing up: Get milk today before the stores run out. and ice melt. and some brandy which you can warm a little after you shovel snow. or maybe a little scotch heated.
