What insulation is this? Safe to remove?

blown in is often fibreglass. blown in can also be cellulose. and it can be ground up printed matter; phone books and newspapers. it looks like fibreglass to me as it seems to stand a little bit even though it is dirty and may have gotten damp. cellulose would have collapsed and remained that way in those circumstances and blown in ground up printed matter flattens on its own. I doubt it is what you think it may have been that makes us so nervous. I could be wrong, but it looks nothing like it. wear protection anyway. you know, I get nervous dealing with this stuff as if mice have lived in there, there is the risk of hantavirus. wear protection as though it were asbestos. read about masks. I wear a mask until I determine there have been no rodents present. the hantaviris is a pulmonary infection. Steve

I recently bought a house built in 1951 and the basement is partially finished. I plan on finishing it and making a mancave! I ran into this old insulation running the whole length of my foundation walls in between the floor joists and the top of the wall. I will leave a couple of pictures and hopefully someone can give me some insight.

Sorry, for some reason when I downloaded the images straight from my phone, they were too big. So I’m trying again with my computer.

it looks like it could be fibreglass which had gotten wet and dirty. possibly. it could be other things. I do not think it is the stuff everyone worries about. Steve
