i don’t think there’s anything in the building code about the ability to get your overstuffed furniture into or out of the building. if you’re moving out (why else would you be worried about the movers) just get on with it. if you want to call 311 after you’ve moved to stick it to a crappy landlord, that’s on you. if you’re not moving out, talk to your landlord about the handrail problem.

Does anyone know what the minimum common corridor width on the first floor should be? First floor occupied by landlord and they have enclosed the entire hallway as part of their apartment making it impossible to hold onto handrail or exit the front door with large furniture.

I was trying to explain that since the work was done without a permit, the minimum passage way in the hallway is most likely inadequate. My point is, there is no longer a hallway on the first floor, just enough space to open the door, then you run into the stairs on the left and a door on the right. I was wondering if that floor plan follows building code.

Is your issue that there’s no handrail? Why don’t you just ask him to install one. The furniture issue is a moot point. Most people have no idea how large a piece of furniture will fit through a door, hinges on or off.

There is a handrail but the wall they put up in the hallway is flush against. I’m concerned that when my movers are coming down the stairs without anything to hold onto they might get hurt. Also, stuck in the hallway since that wall did not exist when we moved in.

Putting up a wall isn’t a gut reno and a gut reno has nothing to do with OP’s problem. Is the stairway narrower than the front door? Presumably if the furniture made it in through the front door when you moved in, there shouldn’t be much of a problem making it back out. Worst case, you may have to take legs off a couch or something to make a turn.
