medallion- safely removed, but how to put back on the ceiling?

Glue and screws. I always toenail the screws —put them in on an angle to pin the medallion in place. You should countersink and predill a hole large enough for the body of the screw to pass through but small enough so the head of screw will hold. The predrilling will prevent the medallion from cracking and the countersinking of the screw will let you sink it so you can plaster it flush. You don’t need to screw it in really tight-you’ll go right through the plaster. Use some plasterweld and fill in screw holes.

our electrician was able to remove the medallion in our living room, but the GC said it’s impossible to put it back on the ceiling. is this correct? what are our options?

Liquid nails, or silicone glue, plus a few screws (the heads of which can be recessed and caulked).

It would scare me to continue with a GC that does not how or who to call to properly restore your plaster ceiling, what else does he/she not know about working on older houses?
Call Fits @ Absolute plaster: 917-412-5593 or 718 495-5262 he can also duplicate any missing parts.

If the back of the medallion is flat there should not be a problem using liquid nails screws and caulk.

We had a new medallion put up. The plasterer’s screwed it to the ceiling and smoothed out the holes with plaster. They even created another ring around it by creating the ring on the floor, cutting it into 4ths and then screwing the sections to the ceiling, pulling the plaster around to hid the joints. All the work is completely invisible.

Caulk & a few screws works fine but I first soaked it in water and liquid soap for a week. All the backing softened and came off. Better yet the many layers of paint came off as well. Finished product looked good as new but was a century old.
