Ditmas Park Stairs / Repairs Needed

Talk to a different stair experts to get estimates and ideas before you proceed. Whether or not the original treads can be saved depends on what the cause of the problem is. In some cases, when the stair has pulled away from the wall, cracks open up and the treads are no longer big enough for the space. Our stairs creak loudly but are safe and beautiful. We decided we would rather live with them as is rather than sacrifice the beautiful treads.

The 16 stairs from the 1st floor to the 2nd need some work. The small solid crown molding, that hold the nose of the treads up, are missing. They make so much nose when walked on & a few nails push up into your feet when you walk on them. They have not been worked on sine they were installed & we would really like to bring them back to their original glory. Accessible through a closet, I think the initial hard part will be removing the lath & plaster to expose the underside. I am in touch with All American Stairs and Architectural Atlantic Stairs for estimates. Any wisdom to share as I move forward with this? I’d really like to handle the demo part ourselves, had some removed recently and though crazy messy I think we can handle it and save $. How hard should we fight to preserve the original treads etc.?
