Use a water base satin poly . apply 3 or 4 light coats and you are good to go

I just had the heating pipes in my apartment stripped, and I love the industrial look that they have now. I’m guessing they’ll rust if I leave them unprotected, but I’d rather not paint them. Can anyone recommend a clear sealant (preferably satin/matte) that I can brush on that won’t smell or set my apartment on fire when the heating system comes on in a few months? Thanks!
