anyone installed an elevator?

no one has been able to figure that out! my building was built around 1910. None of the other buildings on my block have it.

Curious if there are cost effective ways to install an elevator in a brownstone, ground floor to second and third.

Look up Nationwide Lifts. The previous owners of my place had it installed so I don’t know any details but it works well.

Depends on what you mean by “cost effective”. We’re doing one in a 6 story brownstone on the UWS, but because it’s so big, it’s a very different animal than what you’re describing. We spoke with nationwide, but they were unable to do one with so many floors.

Either way, you’re talking about reframing the floor around the shaft opening, so it’s a major undertaking, unless you’re already planning on essentially gutting the place.

We’d be happy to speak with you about the project. Feel free to call us at (646) 309-7259.

if you want an elevator, buy a condo or coop instead of a house.

The “cost-effective” way is not to buy a brownstone without an elevator. If you need an elevator why would you ever contemplate buying what was never meant to be.
Get an residence that is ADA compliant and be happy with it. You won’t be there long.

Some years ago, I represented a brownstone owner in a legal claim against manufacturer and installer of elevator that malfunctioned almost from the start of operation. An important issue is specing the correct size powered motor/system for the intended use.

The amount of structural square footage and engineering that is needed to install an elevator in a Brownstone in this day & age as well as the access & egress to and from it, it becomes prohibitive not only on a cost basis but a space bases.

I am currently exploring this. These other posts saying basically “you are stupid” are offensive and unhelpful. ANY person who plans on aging in place in their own building is gonna be thinking about an elevator! So far the early estimate I am getting is NOT prohibitive. But I am not through the process yet. Also in my building it happens that I have a brick shaft that goes from the basement to the roof and is perfect for a small residential elevator. I will let you know how it goes for me.

@Murri67 People think it’s a stupid idea because they know many people grew old in brownstones, and never used an elevator. I also think because space/egress is necessary, the idea of putting an elevator into your brownstone sounds naive.

Please let us know how it goes, how much space the shaft eats up, and anything else, but don’t reject the negative responses just because it’s not what you WANT to hear.

chair lift is an option for the future to also add: but they devalue not create value in a home. My elevator will get me to the lower floor of a new triplex I am building: an elevator to that complex will for certain add value.
