Who installs ducts for gas dryer?
That should work fine. Use a mortar mix for the rough filling and then caulk the cover tube after the mortar dries.

We have just bought a house in Bed-Stuy, newly renovated with a connection for a washer and gas dryer in the partial grade basement. It is in the middle of the house and on the party wall. We have a sneaking suspicion that there has not been a duct installed. (note to self – check bathroom vent as well!) I have been researching on the internet and conclude that if that is the case, we will have to have a duct installed. So what kind of contractor does that? And does anyone have any recommendations?

Just about any handyman can do it.

Thanks Dave. I am thinking, that this installation will be complicated by the fact that there is some distance that the duct is going to need to go, pushing that 25′ limit. It can’t go left – would have to break through mechanical room and right isn’t good either – bath room and exterior door. I am thinking across to exterior outer side wall – which will barely come under the 25″ limit — but a hole will need to be made. So with all this, is it still a job for a general handyman?

Yes, I would think a handyman can still do it as I could do it. For lengths like that though, you have to use rigid galvanized tin, not flexible corrugated hose.

we did this on a 1st floor dryer with vent going straight up through the 2nd floor and out the roof. Handiman + roofer to seal the roof cap. Yes, rigid tin. About 20 feet.

Thanks all. So going over the info (shout out to Gennady) – I think my biggest concern is putting a hole in the exterior brick wall to vent to the outdoors. The distance is not as far as I thought – more like 20′. The dryer is in the basement. I am thinking the duct would be run along the ceiling to the exterior wall, and so long as that hole in the masonry is carefully made and sealed around the duct, all should be well. It would emerge at about 2′ above the ground.
