Toilet Vent

The toilet vent from our tenant’s apartment may be blocked. What’s the best way to check the vent from the roof?

If you use a plumbing snake to clear the stack from roof, be very careful not to unravel too much length too fast. And be careful to stop well before the end of your snake. It is too easy to unspool the whole length and drop down the stack. i.e. if you have a 25 foot snake you could plan to stop at about 20 feet or less

There is something called a smoke test but you’re not going to do that. What you can do is mix peppermint oil in a pail and pour it down some sink drains. If you smell the peppermint at the vent’s roof terminal then it’s reasonable to assume it’s clear.
