Sump pump trap and kitchen sink

Hello. We recently had a sump pump installed, which has finally solved our flooding basement problem. However, the contractor connected the discharge line to the drain pipe from our kitchen sink, and whenever the pump goes off there is a horrendous gurgling noise coming from the kitchen sink (really loud) and indeed one can even see water bubbling up in the drain sometimes. With the recent rain and snow melt it’s happening every couple of hours. I complained to the contractor and he said it was because of the trap- it’s preventing back flow and we have to live with it. But it looks to me like it’s NOT preventing back flow, and either the trap isn’t working, or the trap is located after the sump discharge meets the sink drain, and we need another trap between the sink drain and that intersection. This is not a normal situation, and we shouldn’t have to “live with it”, right? Thanks, Doug

Yes, sump pump can be discharged into trapped and vented receptical. I had done it both ways and passed physical plumbing inspections with no problems. But question was about piped connection

Whatever the code is, or isn’t- the pump discharge needs to be fixed. Right now when the pump goes off it sounds like there is a Sarlacc under our kitchen. Hell, the dog starts barking- it’s that bad.

Gennady, isn’t a pumped line supposed to discharge into a trapped and vented fixture as well? You can’t mix pressurized drainage with gravity drainage. They need an air break for pressure de-coupling. I swear Brooklyn has crazy-contractor stories that the rest of the boroughs don’t. Where do these people come from?

Thank you for all the info. @Gennady- is that code, or just best practices? This contractor is always citing the building code as the reason he will or won’t do things (which is good of course) so I would like to know this when I demand that he fix it.

No, sump pump discharge can not be connected to sewer line on the street side of the house trap. It cannot be connected to sink drain line. it has to be connected to house sewer before house trap. BTW, sump pump installation must be done by licensed plumber with dob filing and inspection. there quite a lot of requirements for safe and proper installation.

It should be discharging after your house trap on the sewage line. Adds to the cost and labor of the job because depending on where your sump pump Is located, piping is needed to the front, where the house trap is.

There should be other options for you. Can you have the discharge line connect to your storm drain?
