Roots and Sewer Main Line

What are some things that can occur once roots penetrate a sewer line? Over time can the roots cause the line to belly?

I am not an expert just a homeowner, but from what i know 1) roots come from the top of the pipe 2) bellying is usually the result of soil settling and compaction, possibly from leaks 3) old sewer lines are simply butted together and can cause settling at the joints via water and soil issues. Because our brownstone roofs drain into the main drain, we usually have no issues with those major bursts of rainflow blasting settled solids out of the pipe. Beware of sewer and drain people suggesting work – we know many can’t be trusted as a general rule. If they used a camera and 4″ auger and cleared the line, and the belly is modest, i wouldn’t blink twice about letting it be.
