Replacing sewer line on a 2 family home

I am finally going to pull the trigger and replace my sewer line. With the recent floods over the past few years, what are some questions I can ask the potential installer about ways to reduce the likelihood of sewer line backups? Does the community recommend backflow prevention devices? What are other things I should be considering/asking?

If you have the space in a back or front yard, I would highly recommend a dry well to absorb some of the water during major downpours. I have a building that flooded several times due to overwhelmed main sewer line. Since I put in a dry well I haven’t had any issues.

Ask about putting in a device that stops sewage from coming back into your house when it rains a lot or during floods. Find out what kinds of these devices they have and which one they think is best for your home.

I replaced my line 2 years ago due to severe backpitch caused by my 100 year old tree. I didn’t install a backwater valve because I read they are a pain to maintain. I don’t flood from backups though, I would just be fighting crazy clogs due to the backpitch and the house couldn’t drain its rainwater fast enough.

Someday we’ll get separate storm water sewers… and won’t it be nice.
