removing a cast iron drain clog

A cast iron pipe runs down the back of my rear extension. It’s about 10 ft. high. The pipe appears to be clogged, as water is backing up above the pipe. There is a “Y” clean out cover at the base of the CI pipe, installed about 12 years ago. I have never opened it, but it seems to require just removing the cap by turning a screw. Is this something I can do myself to get at the clog, or should I hire a professional?

“Electric Drain and Sewer” 212-889-0169 Last time I checked, it was a flat fee of $170 to clean out the house drain. Roto Rooter also does the same job but costs about twice as much because the will show up very quickly 24/7 for emergencies whereas “Electric Drain and Sewer” you are subject to their schedule. Best of luck! Richard | Manhatta Architecture, P.C. http://www.manhatta.net

Yes you can try but if the clog is bad then call a drain cleaning company. They have heavy duty snakes that would cost you thousands to buy.

Yes. Buy a snake so that you have something to fish around with when you open the cleanout plug. Use it in both directions. And use a garden hose to completely flush it after.
