Reducing height of vent pipes on roof?

These are sewer vents. If roof is used only for weather protection, they should be at least 3′ high, if roof is used not only for weather protection, minimum height is 7′ according plumbing code

I wanted to put a roof deck on our building, but there are 3 or 4 four foot tall metal 3″ vent pipes coming up in random spots. Obviously they are necessary and I’m guessing there is a code height on them, but would they function fine if I cut them down to like one or two feet tall?

I don’t know what code is but the taller they are the less stink they will make that you will notice while you’re trying to enjoy your roof. What about camouflaging them with plantings?

I am guessing you are in a brick apt building of more than 4 stories and your pipes are 4″ interior diameter, not 3.” These pipes vent gas from your sewer lines. You may not notice when the wind blows, but the gas stinks. Where do you want the opening to be in relation to the nose of a sunbather? They also move. Starting in your cellar, your stacks may be about 15′ taller than your living space. Iron expands and contracts, with normal interior changes in temperature, significantly more than the bricks and mortar. Perhaps you can see multiple applications of roofing tar where the seal between the roof and pipes keeps breaking, or you may see scrape marks of an inch or even 2-3 inches in a tall building. One of my clients had pealing paint on a wall in her bathroom; it was water damage from a leak in the roof where a vent like yours kept sliding through the roof. She was on the floor below the top floor. Her disbelieving property manager declined my suggestion to install a flexible waterproof “skirt” allowing the pipe to move and deflect water from the hole in the roof. I couldn’t stop paint from peeling off the wet bathroom wall, after heavy rains, but nobody suggested any fixtures were leaking. I also “discovered” a vent pipe rusted, and broken off below the roof line, venting in to a wall cavity. A new roof membrane covered the old hole. But, the hazardous and expensive problems of all were from Snapple bottles and Arizona Ice Tea cans dropped in to roof drainage pipes (not vents). Hire a good deck builder, one who knows how to protect your roof membrane and plumbing, and build in access for maintenance. What do plumbers say about access to vents, drains, roofs?
