NYC Gas Piping and Paint?

I manage a building that will be getting an inspection/test of the gas piping as per the new law. Some of the smaller pipes that go up to the individual apartments are painted in the basement. Is this illegal in NYC? Do they need to strip the paint off? Are painted pipes tested with different amounts of pressure than unpainted pipes (I read somewhere that they get tested at 90psi)? Thanks for the assistance.

Our owner has it in his minutes from the Sub Ops committee. I think the exact take is that if the paint is existing they do not require it. I can have him reach out to you though with the notes from the meeting if you would like; we have it on hand when we do Gas Work.
That being said we rarely test pipe and leave it anyway…

Changes to that 90 PSI rule haven’t reached me yet. Do you know the Code section or verbiage of the new Code on painted pipe?

They changed the painted pipe rule; it used to alter the amount of pressure used for the testing. That being said, LL152 does not include a pressure test.

the LL152 inspection (I assume that’s what you’re referring to) doesn’t include a pressure test. i wouldn’t strip the paint.
