DEP Violation – sprinkler back flow violation

Augustiner, we’ve been having some technical issues with the Forum, so possibly it was inadvertently lost. FWIW, I didn’t delete it.

Has anyone had an experience of having to install a sprinkler back flow? Recently the DEP entered my basement and slapped me with a violation. I heard that a double check is the same as a back flow but cheaper – does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice is much appreciated!

This happened to us about 6 years ago. The DEP came to repair our AMR. While there, they wrote a us a ticket for not having a meter on the sprinkler feed. We had to hire an architect to file an LAA permit with DOB, and an MP to install a meter & back-flow prevention device on the sprinkler system. Our first application was rejected, and we were required to put a BFPD on the domestic system as well. And there was some discussion of possibly having to modify the sewer, which thankfully we avoided. It was a frustrating experience, and we didn’t find much wiggle room.

The final insult is that we’re now required to have the 3 devices inspected every 12 months ($350) or DEP issues a summons for each device. My advice is to get estimates from several plumbers. Ours ranged quite a bit.

WRT your question, our permit says we installed a 2″DCDA with by-pass meter (sprinkler) and a 1-1/4″DCVA (domestic).
