DEP Notice from the City: Urgent Replacement of Lead Water Main
I recently received a notice from the city requiring me to replace my lead water main, which came as a surprise since I wasn’t aware it was lead. Understanding the urgency, I spoke with my neighbor who had a similar issue and recently had their water main replaced by Harris Water & Sewer due to a leak. They discovered it was lead as well.
If anyone has recommendations for a reliable company to provide a quote for replacing my lead water main, please let me know. Time is of the essence, and I’m eager to get this done. Thank you!

After receiving a notice from DEP last year, I reached out to my brother, who works there. His response was eye-opening: “It looks good on the outside, but very few people actually qualify.” Turns out, the idea of getting a free water main replacement is more of a myth—they lack funding for it. Qualifying criteria are stringent, focusing on low-income households with young children, among other undisclosed variables.
I called Figliolia Plumbing, only to find they had gone out of business. Safeway Water and Harris Water were my next calls. Eventually, I chose Harris Water to replace my pipes for the same reasons mentioned by simpkins1970

Wow, Bob, what a find. I’ve never heard of that city program before. That’s incredible. You could save $10,000 or more — replacing the line can cost upwards of that. Then having to redo the sidewalk and potentially front yard paving can also be pricey.

I’ve never heard of the city requiring the replacement of a lead water main — unless it’s leaking — but it’s certainly a good idea.

AFAIK there are only a few companies that do this. When I had my lesd main replaced by Figliolia many years ago the job took only a day. That was a good thing because DEP shut off my water (the main was leaking).
I wasn’t aware that it was required to rrplace lead mains? but it’s certainly the prudent thing to do.

I can totally relate to your situation—I recently found out I needed to replace my lead water main too. I interviewed a few companies before deciding to have Harris replace my main as well. The job was a lot quicker than I expected, pricing was most fair in comparison to other bids and I now no longer have lead pipes!
