Cost to relocate boiler and hot water heater
Hello brownstoners, As we are approaching our cellar reno, I was wondering if anyone could chime in on cost to relocate our boiler and hot water heater in order to maximize the space. Currently, the boiler and HWH are located on our right side party wall (facing the street) and about 10 – 12 feet from the front of our building. I’d like to move both units to the front of the house as close to the wall as possible and then enclose. Anyone have experience with the process? Would we be without hot water at all or could they do the plumbing work and then move the units over same day? What sort of permits would be required? How much should we expect to pay, all in? Thanks everyone…always appreciate your thoughtful answers.

Eman – I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t know the answer to your question. We have radiators throughout the house and we have to drain hot water from the unit every so often, if that helps.

Wow…thats more than I expected considering I thought we could just move our existing, 4 year old, units over. R2 – I hadn’t thought about the reason for location adjacent to chimney as being an obvious one but it certainly makes sense. I’ll certainly reach out to a couple of reputable plumbers to see what they say and move forward accordingly. Thank you both.

In reality you will need to buy new equipment Boiler & hot water heater, it is a waste of labor costs to move old equipment. The big issue with moving boilers and hot water heaters is access to venting. Most boilers etc in Brownstones are vented up through the chimney stack (flu), hence its position 10-12′ from the front of the house, probably directly underneath the fireplaces. The least horizontal venting, the least carbon monoxide issues. The best bet is to call a couple of plumbers, so that they can give you a better idea when they see the site conditions.

We did this. We used Liberty Plumbing and I think it was around $10k to move both units and install new ones. I could be a bit off on the price as it was a few years ago and I like to forget these things. I think it took a day and a half. We definitely did it during warmer weather when heat wasn’t an issue and I don’t recall being without hot water overnight, so they probably did that in 1 day. As far as filing, the plumber took care of that.
