Hi, I recently moved into a Bed-Stuy brownstone.The drain in the backyard area under my deck is clogged — draining slowly, sometimes backing up for a few minutes before it drains. A contractor friend said I need to call a service like Roto-rooter that has a snake large enough to clear an outdoor drain. I’d appreciate comments on the pros and cons of specific companies in the Bed-Stuy Crown Heights area and recommendations of questions to ask before hiring someone. I’m new to home ownership so no advice is too obvious or basic. Thank you.

I called roto rooter for a routine cleaning and they won’t quote you a price over the phone for any type of work. So unlike other companies that have set prices they will schedule, show up and then give you a price. I understand the logic however if you check their google reviews—which may not be representative—you get repeated complaints where people are being charged $500 for a routine snaking of a drain and pay it in desperation. I’d go to a company that will give you an idea of what they charge.

I say this a lot, but just look into the companies that you call and decide what is important to you.
For example, the above comment makes total sense. Roto-Rooter is a large Master Plumber Licensed company with insurance and overhead so their pricing would be higher than a company like a 49.99 Sewer Company without a Master Plumber License who would in turn be higher than a Fly By Night Mechanic in a truck with a snake.
Congrats on being a new homeowner though! Can’t wait until I get to write that too!

I’ve run into this same problem, and there’s a few things you can do. The first: open your cleanout plug at your main trap and hit it with a wet vacuum. Dirt and detritus can collect in there, especially since you have a catch basin. You’ll want to do this fairly regularly anyhow, maybe seasonally or twice yearly. This may solve your problem, this may not.

The other thing that you really should do is call a sewer company and have them inspect your waste line, so you know what’s going on under the house. Tree roots are incredibly common to find in the waste systems of old homes, clogging things up and damaging the pipes themselves. Whatever is going on, you’ll find out from this.

There are many groups who will do this, I’ve worked with a few in our own sewer journeys: Petri, Econo-sewer, Island Sewer. Each have their pros and cons. Good luck.

I would recommend hiring someone who can also run a camera down there. Just a snake can only tell you so much.

I’ve used a handful; currently I have been using Econo Sewer. Roto Rooter itself charged me an outrageous price once for a simple job. You could also give it a DIY shot yourself with a drill and a store-bought snake, or even one of those drain king hose attachments.

i have heard the same thing dork says about roto rooter.

this last time this happen to me, last winter, my guy was on vacation so i had to use his back up, shane. I could not have been happier.
