Cast Iron Waste Line vs PVC - What is the code?
PVC is greatly frowned upon by Old School Plumbers, which NYC has a lot of, so you rarely see it even when you are allowed by code.
Personally: I think the lack of PVC acceptance in the code is a Union workforce thing but that is a whole different story…
You can legal use PVC as a standard stack line in a two-family as per NYC Code though the code leaves a lot to interpretation so I would not know about your situation exactly!

I’m getting different quotes to replace the old vertical line. One calls for PVC, another to replace with cast iron. In NYC code, for a two family home is a PVC pipe allowed for a vertical waste stack line?

I don’t know what code it, but cast iron is very quiet and PVC is very noisy. You will likely hear water rushing through the PVC pipe if you go with that option.

IIRC, PVC waste lines used to be allowed in NYC one- and two-family houses, but then the code changed and they no longer are. But even if I am mistaken about that, it seems unlikely a master plumber license holder would install PVC if it is not to code. FWIW, we recently replaced a sizable cast iron waste line in our cellar with new cast iron, and there was no discussion of PVC — it never came up.
