As We Approach Heating Season.

Labor Day is September 1st, about four weeks away. As a plumbing and heating contractor, I urge you to consider performing any boiler work or heating upgrades before we get to the holiday weekend. Or at least, have your work done shortly after. The middle and end of September is when all heating companies worth their salt become extremely busy and stay that way for the two months that follow, and then some. At that point, it becomes difficult to get and keep a contractor’s attention.
If you’re performing your own boiler maintenance, make sure your boiler’s low water cut off, carbon monoxide safety switch, flame roll-out switch, and all other code-mandated safety devices are all in place and in working order.
How do you do that?
Most safety devices have two wires connected to the them. Raise your thermostat to get your boiler running and break the circuit by carefully pulling one wire off of each device, one at a time. If the boiler still runs, you’ve got an unsafe wiring problem. If the boiler does turn off, you’re probably ok but some addition testing will reveal whether or not the device will automatically and dutifully break the circuit on its own. That’s a good place to start. Gateway Plumbing and Heating has been my family’s service business since 1976.
72°F Mechanical Consulting, LLC has been my consulting-only firm since 2015.
I also teach the Boilers and Heating course to tradespeople enrolled at The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen.
If I can help, feel free to reach out.
