DOB INSPECTION REGARDING WORK PERMIT

is this in fact the case? there’s nothing visible form outside, so I would consider doing this.Inspector would not find evidence of illegal work. Our issue is the old landmarked house is not zoned to have a shower in basement where we are working (only a toilet) even though EVERYBODY on our block has large showers in their renovated bathrooms. Our house had a shower when we bought it that was installed a long time ago. We just want to upgrade it. We don’t want any hassles and the city demanding that remove a shower.

What will the DOB inspector be looking for if there is a registered complaint for working w/o a building permit? What type of work is permitted w/o a work permit and what type of work requires a permit? Is is mandatory to let them in? What happens when they are denied entrance? How stringent is the inspection, etc? Any comments based on experience appreciated!

No, you don’t have to let them in.  If they don’t actually see work being done (without a permit) they won’t issue a violation.

a neighbor already complained. im assuming if they hear noise they will issue a violation. just wondering what is allowed and not, w/o a permit? what happens if we deny entrance? how would a violation eventually be resolved?

What type of work are you doing?  With certain exceptions, you’re allowed to replace finishes and fixtures in kind and in the same location without obtaining a permit.  If the DoB is unable to obtain access they will not be able to substantiate anything that isn’t visible or audible from the street.

if you deny inspector entrance to house, he will leave and never come back. just make sure he will never enter house.
