Registering your house with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD)

HPD regulates multi-family properties. If you own a single family, I do not think you are required to register.

We bought a house last August and I recently found out that you’re supposed to register it annually with the HPD (cost is $13). Have you, as a homeowner, done this? I called about it and asked if the city is just trying to make money or if we get something for our $13 (which I acknowledge is not a lot of money though one must pay it annually). I was told that if you register your house and a complaint is filed against it you will be notified. Anyway, just curious what the Brownstoner community does. And if you don’t register your house, could you get fined at a later date? Thanks.

We pay it every year.  They’ll keep sending you notices until you do, too.  There’s a form where they ask for the mane of the owner and managing agent, whom the would presumably try to contact should there be a heat complaint or the like.  We just pay the $13 and don’t hear from them until it’s due the next year.  The fee was the same when I owned a litttle apartment building in the 1990’s.

If you’ve never gotten a bill does it mean you’re not on whatever list there is?  I’ve had my landmarked building for 28 years & this is the first I’ve heard about the fee.

I think that this is for multi-family homes?
