Repainting and Landmarks
I know that I can repaint my door the color that it is now without getting Landmarks approval but what if I want to paint it the color it was a long time ago–if I have the old tax photo do i still need to get permission?

Also, remember that the LPC is not interested in finding out what the original color was, they only want to make sure that it is an historically appropriate color. Hot pink may not fly.

You do need LPC approval. They try to work efficiently with individual home owners. They don’t always pull that off — the agency is massively under-staffed — but you can at least call them directly and usually find out who is handling your application.

Mr. B, RE: your response that I could have posted my response to fastfreddy in the threaded discussion rather than posting a new fresh comment; I can’t see how to do that. The only options that show up on my computer are “report” and “add comment” Should I have used one of those?

Repainting it a historic color is pretty straightforward, but you need to document the historic COLOR and you can’t do that with a BLACK AND WHITE photo! There are conservators out there who will take samples from the door, look at it under the microscope, and tell you what the original color was. Armed with that information, you can apply to LPC and they should issue a permit pretty quickly (and without a public hearing). Some local people who do this type of work are: Richbrook Conservation, Jablonski Building Conservation and Integrated Conservation Resources. And yes, it might turn out that it was black!

fastfreddy, Red shows up as black on the orthochromatic B&W film that was generally used c.1940\. Only panchromatic B&W film renders red as a shade of gray. That doesn’t mean your door wasn’t black, but it could just as easily have been red. Of course the staff at LPC might not know that 🙂

I can help you with this because I asked a similar question a few weeks ago and got some great answers from people on this site. Yes, you will have to go through the landmarks application process. I am going through this now with some doors for a customer and have spoken to the Landmarks people. They said it is usually no problem to go back to “original” with a quick turn around in the application. There is no fee for the application and there is a number you can call to speak with them; they appear to be helpful people without all of the bureaucratic snags of typical government agencies. I am sorry, I do not have the number in front of me, but it can be found on the Landmarks website. Steve http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/tinkerswagon

Sorry, Fred, I don’t have an answer for you. I am just testing if I can post on the forum and whether I can read answers. Still kicking the tires on the new site.
