question about tenant complaining about contractor noise

I’ve had a painter coming in each day for the last two days starting about 8 am. The tenants below that apartment are complaining about the noise that early in the morning because they work at night and sleep late. It wakes them up. I have no idea about what noise is bothering them. These are just painters. I’ve been there a good part of the time and there isn’t any noise loud enough that it should disturb them.. There’s no hammering, maybe a little drilling in a wall once in a while. No radio, no loud conversations. Just two guys. They really hardly use any tools but maybe they drop a tool like a screw driver once in a while? I don’t know.  These are decent tenants and I don’t want to antagonize them, but I need to get the apartment painted as soon as possible and I don’t think 8 am is an unusual starting time for a contractor. Or is it? Any suggestions?

If tenants complain about noise at night, they would have the law on their side.  For contractors, on the other hand, parking is often easier at night.  To avoid quality of life cops, we drive unmarked cars and wear tweed jackets with elbow patches at night. Is it true your tenants play bag pipes?

Your neighbors should just be grateful that you don’t have a kid running back and forth.  They key is that they complained after 2 days.  Either they are in la la land or they figure they should nip the problem in the bud.  If the latter than you can tell them not to worry, the work won’t go on for long.  Otherwise, borrow a toddler for a few days and they will come to appreciate the quite of the painters.

Your question is very tough because if the tenants work at night….anytime will be an issue. 8am is ok. Perhaps 10am? Contractors work early and like to be done by 5pm….usually, so that they do not disrupt the homeowners day to day routine. Short of asking the tenants for a time they would be ok with…..get the painters in and out ASAP. Some people just like to complain regardless of what you do. Good luck..
