Nitemare Landlord

I am renting a furnished place. The landlord has made a ridiculous claim that I damaged his furniture and wants it replaced with brand new items. He has sent me notices that this now added rent and since I am have not paid it when due its grounds for eviction. He waited 5 days and now has sent a notice saying I have to vacate the house. While its official looking, it is still just from him. What should I do? Can he evict me without going to court? What if I come home one day and the locks are changed? This has been a nitemare. Please help.

It would be illegal for the landlord to change the locks and lock you out of your apartment. That’s not saying some landlords won’t do it; that’s simply saying it’s illegal. For information about your specific situation and free legal advice, call or visit any of the following: Help Center, Housing Court: http://1.usa.gov/d9g5MZ Citywide Task Force on Housing: http://bit.ly/e4gWnH South Brooklyn Legal Services: http://bit.ly/a4J8bH
