looking to change the old steam heaters in m house to the smaller, sleeker models any one know of a good contractor/company that can do this. thanks

it gets a little sticky , since a lot of the sleek modern radiators are ill designed for use in steam heat…about ten years ago i saw numerous instances where the readiators literally tore themselves off the wall, since they were not designed for the steam btu load of the existing boiler, which is what gennady was getting at in his post…for a free consultation, email me at my contact provided in my profile

Here is the issue with sizing of the steam boilers. Steam boilers are sized up not to the house, but to the radiators installed in the house + domestic hot water load if coils are build in to the boiler. So in simple words the weight of the boiler is equal to weight of all radiators + weight of all non insulated steam  piping in the house. And on the top of that DHW load. Only way to reduce the size of the boiler is to install separate water heater or indirect water heater. Also to reduce size of installed radiators, either by replacing them to smaller ones or install thermostatic radiator valves. And insulate all accessible steam piping. And by doing this reach maximum savings and comfort in operating costs.
