How much do you pay for Gas?

I only use 2 therms a month for Gas.(Cooking only). My total bill is usually ~$15/month… Or $7.5/therm. I’m curious how many therms homeowners consume monthly during heating season and corresponding Total Current Charges.

Total price of gas will increase – I’d expect delivery cost to increase in line with inflation. Who knows about supply cost. Here’s some historical #s for supply price from national grid. https://www.nationalgridus.com/niagaramohawk/home/rates/4_gas_supply.asp During the heating season the supply cost makes up the majority of the bill. No going back to change your 2004 new boiler decision. If you make the bet that gas price will increase (while oil stays flat or decreases) and keep your oil boiler, then you might want to look in to the $.20 / gal tax credit you can get for using a 20% biodiesel blend. http://www.dsireusa.org/incentives/incentive.cfm?Incentive_Code=NY54F

Blog ate my post. I’m a spreadsheet person.  The more numbers the better.   I replaced my oil boiler in 2004 and have been trying to figure out for the past 8 years if I made the right financial decision.  From 2004 to now, I used 16,600 gallons of oil at an average price of $2.60.  I wish I knew what the average price for gas over this period was, but I pretty sure it’s nowhere near current prices.  Anyway, I’m pretty sure that I would now have broken even over the past 8 years.    Fracking is a game changer, but supply is only one part of the equation.  Delivery requires infrastructure, infrastucture requires repairs, repairs cost money which just gets passed along.  I don’t see how the total price of gas will not increase.

Thanks Argyle, what’s been the dollar range over the 15 years. I’ve been using oil for the past 16 years and have used 1700-1950 gallons annually at $2800 to $6500 per year.  2011- $6,600, 2010-$5,400, 2009, $4,000, 2008- $5300, 2007- $4800 5 story brownstone.  Cast iron radiators

bklnite(picking up from a comment in another post), i’ve been working on persuading myself for years now.  By my calculation, holding $/therm at 1.8, oil would have to go down $2.5/gal to breakeven on an operating basis.  Possible but not likely.

I just bought oil today at $3.80/gal.  YTD, i am averaging $3.77/gal.  $3.77/gal vs $1.8/therm works about to about a 1/3 discount for gas currently.

What is the future of gas prices?  Are these record low gas prices the new normal?  How likely is that gas price per therm in going to increase?  I believe heating oil price will move toward $3/gal while gas moves up to $2.25/therm(all in).  At this point, the 1/3 discount for gas pretty much evaporates.

It’s likely the biggest part of your bill is the minimum charge, so it makes less sense to divide your total bill by the 2 therms usage in the month . Natl grid has different rates for for heating and for multifamiliy. My biggest bill last heating season (Rate 1B Res. Heating) was about $360 for 285 therms. The gas charge depends on the market price. Delivery charge per therm is less for usage over ~50 therms. (Minimum charge about $17 for the first 3 therms, then about .59/therm up to 50 and .27/therm for > 50).
