Steam Heat Short Cycling
Last year, we moved into a new house with a steam boiler system. We accidentally overfilled the boiler resulting in exceptionally filthy water and major sight glass surging and horrible noises. Shortly after, short cycling began. Whenever there was an automatic call for heat, the boiler would fire for 5-7 minutes and turn off. Like clockwork. The only thing that stopped the short cycle is manually increasing the temp from what it’s set to or turning off the heat. Nobody could figure out the issue; we replaced the pressuretrol, gauge, and thermostat and the short cycling continued. We also ensured the boiler was properly sized. Finally, we replaced the LWCO and the short cycling stopped! I guess the sensor was corroded. Well, this year we had our boiler maintenanced. Shortly after, extremely dirty water and intensely surging sight glass followed and then short cycling again after every auto call for heat. Exact same problem as last year. Our maintenance guy has replaced the thermostat four times to no avail. Should we replace low water cut off again?

I have done no DIY. All has been done by licensed plumbers/heating pros. When I say “we” I mainly mean paid for it, haha. Do you have contact for the master plumber?

You really should call the guy master plumber on here. What you are trying to do by asking on here can be dangerous. If you by pass something and leave it or damage a safety interlock, it can go very bad. This is not typical DIY like painting and caulking a window.

Their use of that word “surpass”; they might mean “by-pass”.

Whoever is troubleshooting this should begin by jumping out each of the things mp mentions. When it turns back on, that one that you are jumping, that is your culprit.
But I did not say to do that. I am not a boiler person and not qualified to make that statement. You need someone with more experience.

When they “surpass” the thermostat and run the boiler directly from the basement, it doesn’t seem to short cycle. It ONLY short cycles when there is an automatic call for heat. It will stop short cycling if we raise the set temperature higher. It will satisfy the new set temperature and then short cycle again until the next automatic call for heat.

Thank you all for your replies. We are baffled. Last year, the only thing that stopped the short cycling was replacement of the low water cut off. We had a second opinion here today who said it couldn’t be that as it is brand new and seems to be testing okay (which the one did last year as well prior to replacement). He rewired the thermostat. No improvement. So far we are at:
3:23 boiler on 3:27 boiler off
3:51 on 3:56 off
4:16 on 4:20 off
4:31 on 4:34 off
No heat is being brought to the radiators because boiler is not on long enough.

Forget for a moment that this is a boiler. Take what mp has said. I have a car I am dealing with now, one of my old volvos. There is an issue with probably the fuel delivery or injection system. Could be one of possibly six or seven things wrong. I changed the simplest, cheapest thing on my own; the fuel relay. When that did not work, I took the car in to a garage. Now they cannot fix it. Do I waste more time and money playing with this or asking someone else to play with it or do I take it to a volvo dealer? I can keep doing this myself but by the time I fix it, it might equal the cost in time and parts that the volvo dealer charges me.
The same applies with the boiler.

I’m hyperventilating reading this post. How long were you going to tolerate the change-all-the-parts-until-it’s-fixed method? After changing the thermostat twice with no benefit, why did you allow your maintenance guy, whatever that is, to change it two more times? What method did you use to determine the correct boiler size? Is there a licensed professional anywhere in this story?
With that off my chest….
You need to know which device is turning off the boiler during the short cycling. There are only 3 operating controls to the cycle: the thermostat, low water cut off, and pressuretrol. the one that’s cutting off power to the burner circuit will have its own triggers which narrows down all our troubleshooting to a small list of stuff.

“Maintenance guy”? Even if your maintenance guy is licensed and insured for what he is doing, if you as the customer are having to ask questions such as these on here, you need another specialist or should I say a specialist, period. The person working on your boiler should tell you what has to be done and should do it. No hand holding.
There are a few on here. I bet they are all real busy now.
