hello. just joined the brownstoner, but have been on the site for some time now, the info here is invaluable, thank you very much to all who share their expertise and experiences. question – if you had to install a new heating / cooling / hot water system in the house, what would it be? house is 1930’s, about 16’x38′, frame, basement and first floor will be duplex, second floor rental.  basement needs to be gutted. any advice is greatly appreciated.

I’m in love with the split system a/c units in my apartment. It was a great purchase for the building. The units are super quiet, small and work quickly when I need them to. Circulating hot water (aka hydronic) heating is still the most efficient, flexible, comfortable and healthy way to heat a home. Homes with boilers get to use indirect water heaters. They’re among the most efficient ways to make hot water quickly without overloading your chimney or running up against strict NYC venting codes.

This is what I did:
– Heat Pump ductless minisplit for heating and cooling (only recommendable if you insulate properly)
– Heat Pump waterheater (lookup e.g. Stiebel Eltron Accelera or GE Geospring) What I would have done if I had double the $$$ to spend:
– Radiant floor heating
– Hydronic radiators
– Ductless minisplit for cooling only
