Yeah this is such a bummer. I’ve helped redesign a site and I know it’s always dicey–people hate change, period. But the site really is less usable than it used to be which must be painful. I haven’t stopped visiting, yet, but I don’t visit the main page at all anymore.

To wit, as I typed this, I had just posted about stuff for free and already it’s bumped down the page because of comments on this post from weeks ago! That just makes no sense. Whoever designed the forum simply didn’t do due diligence on how it was used, squandering what, a decade of posts plus all the goodwill of regulars?

I agree, lurker (and apologies for my part in bumping your forum post — of course, you could comment on your own post and bump it right back up there). But yes, I agree with you that the forum isn’t serving its posters well. Nor does it help to make a home page story out of a week old forum post where the OP has his/her answer. Back in the good old days, Brownstoner would invigorate a current post as a “Forum question of the day” thread, stirring up interest in the forum and in the post when it is of most use to the OP. .

Missing the old Brownstoner! Embedded links to older posts don’t work anymore. I just tried pointing someone to an old post that I wrote and the link was a 404. Plus, there’s no way to copy the link easily to say “here, look at this” in response to the questions that come up again and again (bluestone, windows). I took the time to copy-paste some info for someone but I got lazy for the next question. Not that it matters, but I’m a former web designer and used to specialize in USABILITY STUDIES (which it appears the new designers failed to do). Or else, they forgot that they have all kinds of web users on the site (READ: There are a lot of older users that aren’t just reading headlines. And they are typing more than one word answers and/or reading headlines.) Irrespective, the search function is the HEART of this website and there is no excuse for it not working perfectly every time. Someone please fix this.

I agree, randi. Between the big type, big photos and fluffy content, they appear to be trying to make very little meaningful content look like a lot. One simple “intro to Brooklyn apartments article ” could cover all of the basics — classic 6, floor through, railroad, minimum requirements for a studio, 1BR, 2BR, what is a half bath, etc. And yeah, the content seems geared almost exclusively now to people who are both new to brooklyn and new to real estate.

I miss the brownstoner of about 6- 7 years ago. I really hate the format of the site and the dumb never ending scrolling. I too have problems getting the forum to load. If that happens, I don’t bother reloading. I just move on…

i hate the new forum, no longer works in IE…..ive been on contact and they havent fixed it for 6 months etc.

shows you really can screw up soemthign good quickly if you dont understand what the community wants/needs.

regarding the forum- how hard would it be to have a SORT feature where you could choose NEWEST or OLDEST or MOST RECENT COMMENTS or something like that? you know, like every other freaking comment thread on the internet.

The forum is pretty much all I ever read any more. I came here a decade ago when I was renovating my wrecked house and needed advice and guidance from others like me, who were doing it out of love, passion and necessity. I like articles and posts about architecture, history and new developments, but I truly want to hear from the users and what they are up to the most. Perhaps an interview series with some of the long-timers?

has any one noticed that the new design has made it way harder to simply post on a subject? you have to sign in again and restart the post in order to leave a comment… why did blankslate design such a terrible interface? That , with the entirely vapid news content (what is a garden apartment/ what is a classic six) will kill the site

It’s clear Brownstoner is trying to draw people in from search engines, but to me, those are one time clickers. It took years and years to built the community here. I can’t understand what the strategy is. Brownstoner was a huge part of people’s lives and it’s just gone now.
