I have not heard of Landmarks approving any vinyl windows. Aluminium clad wood windows: yes. Even aluminum windows, but not vinyl.

Why? If they were installed before the house/block being designated then they are grandfathered. If after, in violation, then that’s a different can of worms.

I have had composite windows approved by LPC, not vinyl per se, but not metal or wood. It depends on whether the profiles match, or come close to matching the historic ones. Bob, you dont need to file with the DOB for window replacements alone…. now, if it was part of a larger renovation, that’s another story

We bought a house not knowing a window was in violation. We got a replacement to match the front windows next to it. We were told it was not the right window- even after using windows we are. We were also then told some of the framing around are windows was incorrect and we would have to fix it before correcting the initial window. I perused asking for specifics of what exactly we needed and was told it had to match the picture from when it was landmarked. They didn’t know but it wasn’t right. They suggested I walk around the block and look at other windows and keep trying!!!!

While it’s true that LPC doesn’t look at interiors, an interior renovation that requires a DOB permit gets sent to them too so that LPC can make sure there’s no effect on the exterior. I was wondering if the whole gut renovation was un-permitted.

The project had a full plan exam, the windows were not to be replaced at that time. There were existing landmark violations when the property was bought. I don’t know if the new violation is a reiteration of an old one or because of the vinyl windows. We are making an application now to legalize the windows. I am not the owner.

Unlikely that you will be able to legalize vinyl windows. Call LPC and ask for advice.
