Laminated/safety glass or insulated glass for deck door?
No A/C.
I planning to go with insulated & tempered (safety) glass on the french doors. Plus the Anderson 3000 Series Fullview aluminum storm door.

I’m replacing the door that leads to the back deck from my 2nd-story kitchen (in a triplex over a 1-story unit). I’m looking for recommendations about whether to use laminated/safety glass or insulated glass or a combo. The door is as wide as a parlor-level window. (The prior owners added the deck and replaced the window with a door to the deck.) The door will open in the middle, like a french door, except narrower, not double doors. Each side of the door is glass in a wood frame. Insulated glass can generate condensation in between the panes. And, if broken, it will shatter. Laminated glass won’t shatter but offers less insulation. Contractor is pushing laminated. Thank you in advance!

I don’t have an answer to your question, but I’m wondering where you are getting the new door. I need to replace a door to my deck similar to yours (ie, window that was converted to a door to a deck by a previous owner).

There are insulated laminated units. (which would be best) It doubles the cost of the door though. If you go the standard route, the glass needs to be safety tempered for the patio door to be to code. A single pane of laminated glass, you’ll feel a noticeable chill standing by the door. Personally, i wouldn’t recommend a door built by a contractor, when you can buy one from a reputable company that builds these things in a controlled factory, properly sealed glass with argon fill, and a exterior finish that you won’t have to redo every few years, thats backed by a warranty.

Green thinker 110 percent correct when encouraging you to buy door rather than have contractor build.
One point on expense of laminated glass tho: we found while searching for new windows that the upcharge for lammination varied widely by manufacturer. I’m assuming same will be true for doors. We were comparing Marvin ultimate next gens with the nice Andersen clad wood windows and Andersen’s charge for lammy was so expensive and Marvin so little that by the time all was said and done the prices were about the same., so the Marvins became an absolute no brainer.
Can’t remember exact figures but per window Marvin upcharge was only like 200-300 and Anderson 600/800 or so (I’m more certain on the Marvin it’s been a while).
So lesson is shop around!

Join in the chorus above. Any major window/door company can build a laminated glass door. Just look at the hurricane/Florida rated or “impact” product lines. It will give you an added security benefit, and better soundproofing.

As a window guy…
Any company will make an Insulated laminated door. Door will be priced a bit higher.
A typical door already has safty (tempered) glass as standard.

By standard route, i mean just getting dual pane insulated glass. There have been cases where a contractor has used normal untempered glass,a few years ago a doorman slipped and went through such a door and died from the injuries. Untempered glass shatters into large pieces that can cut you up pretty badly. Tempered glass is stronger, and if broken, shatters into a million tiny pieces.
If you get a patio door from a reputable company, it will be tempered by default. A contractor might be ignorant or simply want to improve his own margin. So i mention it, just so you are aware that the glass itself should be tempered.
It’s also possible to get insulated safety tempered glass. In my case, i ordered a window from andersen, the outside pane is tempered safety glass, followed by an air space filled with argon gas, followed by a tempered laminated pane of glass. This was for a large casement window in a basement apartment right by the street, so for me it was a better option than bars on the window itself.
In most cases, you’re only as safe as your weakest entrance/wind ow. So you can spend money on laminated glass only for someone to enter through the window or pop a lock somewhere. If it’s a matter of insulation factor, a standard dual pane tempered patio door is all you need, companies also provide coating options such as low-e and now heatlock coatings, which keep heat in, cold out. There are triple pane options too. If you google andersen glass options, or marvin glass options, you’ll find whats available with charts and numbers on the performance.

Thank you, Green Thinker. I need to get prices but I’m leaning toward laminated (rather than tempered) & insulated, given that I may eventually let out the unit.

Would a storm door (glass in the winter) remove the need for insulated glass?

Two doors will cost more than one. If the glass is within 18″ of the floor it must be safety glass – tempered or laminated. Glazing must be double pane to meet energy code. So buy a real door from a manufacturer like Simpson, Andersen, etc. which will have safety glass and be insulated. If you want to spend less money you could get one where only the top half is glass.

The storm door is already included in the price. It won’t cost me more. Given that, does insulated glass still make sense?
