Yesterday, my tenant called me in the afternoon about a firetruck stopping by and trying to get access to the house. She said she didn’t smell any smoke and the smoke/co alarm did not go off. Also she was startled, didn’t even know the truck was parked outside, there was no siren. Since she was alone and there does not seem to be any danger, she did not feel safe to open the door for them.

I called 311 later in the day to get some more details and the FDNY command center did not find any reports/calls on my address which I found was very strange. After work, I stopped by the local FDNY station and they don’t recall stopping by and mentioned something about Building Inspection (BI) and asked if I lived in a 3 family. Apparently the FDNY does an annual BI inspection randomly on houses. They told me not to worry about it.

Anyone heard of this? If it was an inspection, they didn’t leave a note? How would they ever get people since most people work and it seems like this is usually done during the weekday? Is it one of those things if they miss you, then that’s it or they w ill keep coming back? should I just contact the chief in the local station? Last since this seems to target 3 family, there is a discrepancy that Finance is still showing my house is 3F even though the current CO is showing 2F. Just don’t want them to check and expect sprinkler system.

Stop stressing.
Yes, the FDNY does do random inspections, when they have nothing else to do. And it is often with the full crew in the truck so that they are ready if they do get a 911 call. Just as they all go together to buy groceries, it does not mean the supermarket called them or had a problem.
For 3 family + buildings, they do sometimes just stop by to look at your signage, the sprinkler system etc. Not often… but sometimes.
If your house was previously a 3 or more house, it will remain on some out dated lists for ever. Do not bother trying to correct all the obsolete lists, no NYC employee can or has the time to go through all their records to cross every T or dot every I just because you changed your C of O.
Just make sure your new C of O is recorded properly & that you are in the right Tax assessors class.
If the FDNY leaves paperwork, read it and respond if needed. Otherwise relax…..
