Her point being? Don’t complain about what the old timers do unless you are one? Even if the old timer is completely in the wrong (cones are not a thing in any BK hood I know)? It’s ok when gentrifiers rent and pay exorbitant rents but not ok when they buy and have a stake in neighborhood norms?

I have been in BK 33 years and bought our current house 13 years ago. The old timers and newcomers on my block get along because we share a common set of norms around what makes for a civil and neighborly block. None of us pulls any of that nonsense with the cones. And we don;t turn any discussion about issues on our block into as fight over who has a right to say something.

I will say this, if you have never been a resident of a neighborhood that was a victim of gentrification, then it’s hard to get the point RW is making. Granted RW is a bit over the top, but often gentrification isn’t just a new crowd of people moving in, it’s literally wiping out the entire culture and feel of the neighborhood. Lots of times you will see newcomers move to a block and see what they can do to “fix it” or “make it better” or “make everyone feel at home”. Is there anything wrong with that ? Absolutely not
But to the established residents, the block doesn’t need “fixing”.
Is the man wrong for placing cones to save a spot ? Of course he is!
But come on is it REALLY that big of a deal and if the entire block isn’t bothered with it then it’s not that serious.
Have you ever tried to have a convo with this man BEFORE you were upset about his cones ?
Did you ever make a joke with him ? Say anything to him at all? I guarantee you if you were cool or neighborly to one another prior to this he would have listened to you.
RW isn’t saying nobody should follow the ru les, they’re trying to say learn how things work on the block BEFORE you rock the boat. Neighbors can work stuff out without having to involve 311.
If all else fails, then get some cones and do the same! Hahahaha!

That’s why you make this an issue now. Cones are not the norm. The longer it slides teh harder it is to change and the more likely others will follow suit. The guy with the cones is the one trying to change things. I doubt anyone who does that is receptive to a friendly approach. But your suggestion about getting to know the block is a good one. To the extent randi hasn’t done it, a good strategy is to sound out a few friendly folks on the block first. This may lead to good info, a collective strategy, etc. But I wouldn’t scorn anyone for being PO’d at this or the arrogance behind it.

My point is, if they had been friendly towards one another BEFORE the cone incident, it would be easy to handle now.

I know you meant it as a joke, but I think it can play out the way I described. How does anyone know anything? I dunno, the cone thing is pretty obnoxious, and he must know it and does it anyway, unless he is not an old timer but just moved here from Boston. Yeah, talk to him, ok, but common sense suggests not to expect much. Do a little reconnaissance with the neighbors (what’s the deal with that guy, etc?”) may help find the right solution. But let’s not pretend this is just some guy who doesn’t know better and that it isn’t obnoxious behavior anywhere in BK, no matter how long one has lived here. I know there is a temptation to call out a sense and tone of entitlement on the OP’s part, here, but it is misplaced.

I moved his cones to park my car and the next morning when I went to the car he was waiting to confront me. He was upset, I was totally fine with my parking job. He accused me of being a bad neighbor. I politely disagreed. It remains the first and last conversation we have had.

Did he give any reason why he thought he was entitled to save his spot? My view is that this is only ok for dumpsters, specific construction needs, etc., and not just to privatize public space.

I agree – the guy is a jerk and not entitled to hold the spot, but it’s probably best not to make enemies of your neighbors. On my block we have an old-timer who holds two spots in front of his building for his two trucks that are piled high and overflowing with scrap metal, and he basically runs a hoarding operation pretending to be a recycling business, with old air conditioners, tire rims, rusty bicycles, etc. all over the sidewalk. So you should consider yourself lucky, there are worse neighbors.
