TILE FLOOR -- REMOVE AND REPLACE

I am looking for someone to remove a tiled kitchen floor, assess the original wood floor underneath (if it exists) and retile or refinish based on what lies beneath. I want to hire someone with expertise in this type of job and who does clean and detailed work. Can anyone give me an idea of the cost for removal and floor prep parts of the job? recs?

Thanks for the responses. More info: The current tile has been laid on thick plywood and seems level with one exception. There is some cracking in one area in front of the sink so I do think that spot needs special attention. Keep the recs coming!

Bear in mind the integrity and durability of the new floor wil be determined by the subfloor and its strength. Old school was poured cement, called a mud job. If you are happy with how the previous tile job held up, and the thresholds to adjoining spaces are level enough, they can pop the old tiles off a cement slab and clean and thinset on the slab again. If the tile was on wood, or masonite on wood, now is the time to reinforce and level the floor, and cover with thinsetted backerboard. Tile will last forever if it is perched on a foundation that is rigid and strong. It has no strength of its own, it lives at the mercy of the subfloor. You want a tile setter who does this all the time, not a handyman who has done “some” tile before. This is one trade in which your long term satisfaction can and will vary widely depending on the thoroughness of the installer. I would additionally recommend Laticrete epoxy grout for a kitchen. It’s hard to work with, but it doesn’t stain and discolor like conventional grout. The fact that an installer is familiar and OK with epoxy is a good sign. Expect to pay extra but is well worth it. Do it once and do it right.

Call Oleg 347-583-0523\. He did my kitchen tiling and I recommended him a few times on here and folks seem to be happy with the quality of his work.
