RESTORING WOOD FLOORS

I’m thinking of tearing up my existing floor and re-finishing the wide board floor beneath. Does anyone know of a good floor person who knows old buildings and can tell me what the floor I have underneath is and if its worth using.

lots of people go the subfloor only route on purpose… we are living with subfloor only right now and I can tell you the noise is a lot more when you have only a subfloor in place. If you have beautiful board subfloor that you want to use, consider having someone install plywood subfloor beneath

You do not say how old the existing floor is – is it oak strip flooring that was put down when the building was built?  if so, the wide board you see underneath will be sub floor which was intended to be covered and will be quite rough with gaps in between.  Now, if you current floor was something put down much later, there is a chance that the wide board underneath is plank flooring which my be worth refinishsing.
