Refinishing/Staining Parquet Floors - Clinton Hill Coops
Hello all – I’m looking to refinish wood parquet floors in a 1BR in the Clinton Hill Coops. Are there any Brownstoners who live in the Clinton Hill Coops who have done this? Do I need to be concerned with about asbestos in the glue? Finally, I’d appreciate any recommendations or other advice. Thank you!

Get a good, long-lasting job, not cheap job you will soon regret.

Thanks, Greenmountain and Dave. As you can probably guess, I’m new to homeownership and any kind of renovation so I really appreciate the perspective. Anyone you’d recommend?

Never heard of asbestos in wood flooring or the glue. The only time you really run into it is old linoleum that is sometimes asbestos based. Don’t create a problem where one does not exist. Floor refinishing is a fairly mundane renovation and there shouldn’t be any issues in a coop other than what time of the day it can be done and what elevator they need to use to scedule their comings and goings. You’re making a mountain out of a mole hill. Don’t bring it up.

The only way to tell for sure is to have your floor tested. You can also ask your management what they know about it. However, my experience is your wood strips are well adhered to the concrete substrate. Floor sanders are unlikely to either encounter any of the black gook, or dislodge any strips. Only a couple spots, say entering your kitchen or bathroom may have loose boards or saddles where you may be able to see the adhesive. I think you will recognize it is not the sort of stuff to become distributed without your knowing it. Personally, and in my business, I take a lot of precautions when working with all types of dust, liquids and fumes, even when inconvenient and uncomfortable. I also try to be aware of all the risks in my work environment and client’s property. I don’t want to take extreme precautions against one risk, and ignore a greater risk. I find the Arts Crafts Theater Safety newsletter (ACTS) helpful. http://www.artscraftstheatersafety.org/newsletter.html One of many problems I have with coop rules and practices is that lead or asbestos bearing dust from work in apartments is routinely distributed in common areas and corridors and later in the air behind trucks as it is carted away through our streets and neighborhoods. How silly we are to require contractors to protect our entire building interior as if we expect widespread damage while workers pass through with open containers, and we never ask our workers to wrap or seal the material they carry. Given that working hours are so restricted; access to elevators, loading zones, and parking is so competitive, we would have far less dust and fumes released or liquids spilled if only we allowed workers to spend more time protecting small objects and wrapping cargo on rubber-wheeled dollies, and less time rolling and unrolling construction paper. Surely, all that show-time with the pink paper reduces the spread of dust, not at all, and results in more dust in hallways and basements, not less. But, wise coop board members from Chelm to Brooklyn have never questioned the time-honored protective power of pink paper.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I’m hoping not to replace or remove any of the wood; rather just sand and re-stain it. I stumbled upon a home improvement site warning that the glue or adhesive used for some parquet floors contained asbestos, making refinishing a nightmare. But, I have no idea if this is the case for the Clinton Hill coops wood floors so I thought I’d check here to see if anyone had any insight. But I think you may have answered my question — thank you!

What glue? Are you removing or replacing some wood pieces? I removed a small section of floor in one of your buildings to tile the area. It was not tested and was too small to re mediate if asbestos was found. The glue was like tar or asphaltum. Otherwise, I never heard of asbestos in the wood or finish.
