Painted/Glazed Pine Floors
Has anyone painted or glazed their pine floors? I have see some technique where it looks like a sheer color and you can still see the wood grain and knots. But I am not sure what it is called or how it is done. Our floor has water based poly on it now, but is starting to look bad with alot of filler coming out from between the boards and dents in it. Thanks

I posted a question earlier this year on this exact subject. The previous owner had used filler (which was coming out everywhere) and an oil-based semi-gloss PU (which gave the pine a deep amber look). After much contemplation and research I ended up trying one room in water-based satin instead, resanding the floor and not filling the gaps (and removing all filler that remained, which wasn’t much). The water-based is much lighter looking, and much more natural looking in my opinion. Also, I think the gaps actually added character to the floor as they gave a good dark contrast to the light floors. I plan to do the rest of the floors the exact same way. Now the caveats… pine is pine is pine, it is freaking soft and unless you put a steel plate over it, it will dent. If you don’t like the dents, you can always put another wood floor overtop (not my style). secondly, since the water-based PU was just applied, I cannot attest to its durability. From what I read the Bona Traffic was the only way to go on the water-based side (although more expensive). And finally, not filling gaps is contingent upon how large the gaps are… if they’re too big it may not be comfortable to walk on. Most of mine are ~ 1/8 to 1/4″ and I don’t find them obtrusive. I used Jose @ JC Construction 917-355-7977, very nice guy, does good work and reasonable prices.

We have four coats of water-based poly on our pine floors, and so far it’s holding up pretty well. But almost anything will dent them because the wood is soft, and this will not change if you paint them. Think carefully about painting them — will others be able to remove the paint, or is the pine too far sanded? Most people prefer the wood look.

Yes, they are the original pine floors, and you are right the filler is coming out.

Filler will always come out. Why was filler used? Are they original pine floors?
