Our 3-story back wall is peeling paint (see photo) in some places and has well-adhered paint in other places. What’s the best way to remove it all without damaging the outer brick surface? Do chemical removers stain the brick, like PeelAway? What tools to scrape with so it doesn’t do damage? Any tips from those that have done it? Thanks! We hired a contractor to strip the paint off of our brick wall and then repoint it. They used PeelAway though it took more than one application. And the lower portion of our back wall had been stuccoed over too, so that paint and stucco didn’t come off completely. The attempts to get that off did start to pull the front off some of the bricks, so we had to leave that part sort of “shabby chic.” I’m sure other do-it-yourselfers Brownstoners will respond and give you more info but this is what we did. There is a cleaning process after the PeelAway comes off, but I can’t remember the whole process.

Were you happy with the contractor and the results? Willing to share info? We went the diy route with peel away and it’s very laborious but it mostly works. I’m ready to hire someone to finish it off and repoint. I want someone who will be mindful and match the existing mortar.

The proper way to do an exterior cleaning/refinishing job would involve a full repointing of all the bricks. Since it wouldn’t be a patch job, all the mortar used would be the same and matching the existing mortar would not be an issue.

I used citristrip and a power washer with mixed results. But the parts where it worked it worked well.

@jodie1028 Sorry for the late reply: Shamin Ahmed, 347-219-7909. Yes we were happy with the work he did.
