removing a NYNEX box

Just call verizon and have them remove it for you. It avoids the hassle.

We have a NYNEX box on the rear wall of our Brownstone, and I want to get rid of it when we do some major exterior repairs. We don’t have any wired phone service at all in the house anymore. Has anyone else tried to do this? Should I call Verizon? Can I just cut the cables?

If it’s in your house and you aren’t using it you can just yank it. It wont affect aything. Verizon won’t even come over for something like that,

that’s ok, but with our cable based phone service we run a jack from the modem into one of the house phone jacks and then all phones in the house are run off that old and internal NYNEX wiring.  The reason I am telling you this is so that if you are using your phones in this way, you will want to carefully disconnect the box and remove it and cap the individual wires going into the house so as they do not contact each other and create a short.  there should be 4 wires (unless other jacks are run off the main box), Nynex required two, but cap and tape them all and tuck them in somewhere.  You know, even if you are not using a system such as I have, you never know when those jacks may come in handy.  Heck, we used a telephone line one time to drop a temperature recieving unit in a switch room and then put the thermoter display unit at the other end three floors away so we could remotely monitor the temperature – so we do not know what use any of us may find for those wires. you can probably just remove it on your own and nobody will care but the reality is that it is verizon’s property and technically you’re not supposed to remove it. I had a similar issue and contacted Verizon – they sent someone out in short order and removed the box and wires. This happens all the time with construction.

Verizon owns the box.
