Painting Steel Hand Rails

We recently built a deck at our home. We made a steel frame work then used wood panels. To protect the steel framework and guard rails we got these powder coated by http://www.automaticcoating.com/. Final result we got was worth the effort.

We are stuck with very shiny and ornate stainless steel handrails (similiar to pic attached) for a while. Is there any way to paint these?  I would assume they would need to be corroded or dulled before anything would adhere to them…. Has anyone tackled this before?  It’s going to be a while before we replace them.  Thanks

you will need to sand them down.  My guess would be 120 grit paper so as to give the paint something to mechanically bond to.  Etching acid may do the trick as well (this is available at an auto body supply) I would also use a really good primer, but I am not sure what type.  Something with epoxy in it may work best.  See what Dupont makes as someone I consult with told me they use a spray on epoxy made by dupont.  Consider auto finishes.  Also, consider PPG (Pittsburgh Paint) as I think they make some good industrial coatings. I’ve used self etching primer after a light sanding with good results.  Then paint as normal.

I had my cast iron radiators powder-coated at EverNu Metal on 20th Street, Brooklyn, Fantastic finish, never need to repaint, any color you want. They do fences all the time.
