Landmarks Bluestone Sidewalk Recommendation

Just make sure that the contractor follows the NYC DOB sidewalk requirements for the bluestone: minimum 2″ thick, NYS reed free natural cleft. The thinner stone (often from Pennsylvania) doesn’t hold up – an example was the (too thin) bluestone at Borough Hall in downtown Brooklyn that cracked and delaminated. Thinner slabs are ok for a backyard patio but not a sidewalk. Reusing existing bluestone is best of all as long as the pieces are not too small.

Since a number of posters here are looking for good bluestone sidewalk vendors, after going to a number of contractors for a similar job, I thought I’d post a recommendation for Jeff Hewitt and his Williamsburg Garden Company.

I live in a landmarked block and had a number cracked bluestone slabs on my 25′ frontage that I needed to replace for insurance purposes. Jeff determined which of the existing slabs could be reused or cut onsite to repurpose, thereby saving me quite a bit of money, put together a very reasonable quote, and completed the job in a single day. The joints between the slabs are extremely tight – a huge cosmetic (and probably Landmarks, though I never received a ticket for it) improvement over the previous job some 15 years ago that required blue-tinted concrete filler. Jeff is super easy to work with and thoroughly knowledgable and transparent on the whole process, start to finish. Cleaned up completely afterwards, and offered to come back to re-sand between the joints when needed.

I did receive 2 other quotes for the work: one from a contractor who was very low priced but, in my opinion, not aware enough of Landmarks requirements and limitations, and a second from one who was Landmarks aware but priced much higher. Jeff was also highly recommended by my neighbors who had hired him to complete similar jobs on my block.

How deep was your sidewalk and what did it cost? eg 25 by X?

Our coop in Brooklyn Heights is thinking of getting our sidewalk and front courtyard done but balked at some of the costs we read about online.
