Historical Restoration of My Frame House
The estimates of $10,000 to $40,000 I have received are for ONE side only. We have two only stories of siding (because the ground level is brick).

I am looking to restore the look of my frame house by replacing the vinyl siding with wood (or hardie board) and adding cornices to the windows, doors and roof. House is 18 feet wide and 35 feet tall. How much would a project like this cost me? Approximately how long does this take to do? What are the unforeseeable costs that may come up during such a project? Who do you recommend?

The best would be to call a contractor to come and take a look. It would be hard to give you an estimate without discussing the specifics with you. We give free written estimates! Feel free to contact us: 718-502-4414, Excellent.Contracting@gmail.com

Homeowner here. I would like to do this too. FWIW, I have heard general estimates of $10,000 to $40,000, which I think probably includes the most basic standard siding and trim with a cornice but not a real restoration, but I am not sure.

My neighbors here at the Br Navy Yard, Omar and Belda, reproduce historic architectural woodwork, interior and exterior. Artwoodcrafts@gmail.com. Doors, moldings, cornices, corbels, hand carved or turned. Many other excellent crafts people operate from the Navy Yard.

A real restoration would mean restoring it to exactly what it was originally, including gingerbread, windows, doors, siding, etc.

thanks mopar. i think what we are truly looking for is replacing the vinyl siding and adding cornices.

Can’t see $10k. Cornice alone will probably run something near that. I would consider hardiplank. Lord knows what “original” actually looks like, but much less maintenance and repainting involved with hardiplank than real wood planks. NOTE: use the smooth side, not the grain side. Looks more like real wood when painted. Also, look for a good model of what you want the casings and cornice to look like. I would highly recommend a stroll down 11th Street between 3rd & 4th Aves for models.
