I’m renovating a building in Bushwick and I’m looking to replace the aluminum awning with something more traditional. Any assistance would be appreciated – even an architectural catalog to buy the brackets and other details to build our own. We are putting a fiberglass cornice back on the front, and stripping some old tile to expose the brick, but this is not a landmarked house.

i ordered a traditional sort of cloth awning on the ‘net. happy with it. there was a place in glendale that makes them up, my neighbor ordered hers from there and had it reclothed a few years back. might be glendale awning.

I think you are looking for a canopy, not an awning. Is this a wood frame house? I just did everything you describe: Removed faux stone veneer on the first floor to expose the original brick, restored the cornice (ours was still there so we exposed, repaired and painted it) and created a canopy. My advice is to walk and drive around Bushwick and eastern Bed Stuy looking for examples of canopies the same age as your house and take lots of photos. You can create a reasonable looking reproduction using off the shelf bits and pieces. The only caveat is there aren’t many bracket options available and they are mostly 1850s/Italianate. That’s what we used even though our place is 1895. You can mill your own brackets, of course, but we didn’t want to go that route. Do not rely on the city’s date, it is wrong. You can figure out the age of your house by a combination of interior and exterior detail, old maps, and searching by the address of the first or last house in the row in the Brooklyn Eagle archive.
